Star Trek TNG

You can get all episodes and seasons of Star Trek TNG on Netflix now (actually its been available for some time). It’s weird to watch it in 4:3 and see what we considered Science Fiction, only 20 years ago. So much of what they imagined has already been realized, and even surpassed! Now if we could just figure out inertial dampers and warp drive!

The Holy MacBook Pro with Retina Display

One of my friends recently commented (and rightly so) that he couldn’t see the holy aura that usually emanates from new Apple products in my pics of the MBPr. How right he was! I usually take care to remove the holy aura with Pixelmator before posting pictures so as not to distract from the computer itself, but in light of the fact that many people want to see the “original” photos, I have posted a copy here: Read On →

My copy of Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac is getting a little long in the tooth, and I hear there is a new version coming out pretty soon, so when I started setting up my new MBPr, I figured it was a good time to try LibreOffice. LibreOffice
It might be really good, and I could get rid of MS Office completely, or maybe it will be good enough to get me over the hump to the new version…

LibreOffice comes in a convenient package that looks like a single file for the Mac (even though it’s really a directory). Raspberry Pi (someday…)

The best thing and the worst thing about Raspberry Pi is the price: $35. You can’t beat that with a stick. Sure it doesn’t come with a case, or a power supply, or any sort of input devices, but that’s half the fun. I’m on the waiting list for one of these now (more if I can get them). The “problem” with the price is that a TON of people want this little gem and that is making it hard to get. Read On →

MacBook Pro with Retina Display (and Pegasus R4)

My new MacBook Pro with Retina Display will henceforth be called simply the MPBr. The product itself is terrific, but why in the world did they give it such a long (really long) name? Anyway, here is a pic.. MacBook Pro with Retina Display (MBPr)
I haven’t installed any of my software yet, so you’ll have to wait for full impressions of everything I use. The first thing I did was set the display to 1920×1200, or what looks like 1920×1200 on the MBPr’s 2880×1800 display. Read On →

Alan Turing

alan-turing
Alan Turing, the man who cracked the German Enigma machine and who is considered the father of computer science would have been 100 today. Instead we lost him when he was 41 and took his own life rather than be persecuted by society for his homosexuality. I can only try to imagine what we’ve deprived ourselves of by cutting our time with this genius short. Read On →

Entities and Bundles in Drupal 7

click to get the full size PDF I have to say that one of the things that I have spend the most time trying to get a good grasp of in Drupal 7 is the concept of Entities and Bundles in Drupal 7. The Field API seemed pretty intuitive, and the basic concept of Entities (a computer science-y word for “things” or “objects”) seemed pretty clear. This great tutorial from Trellon helped a lot. SCP on a Mac

$cp: No such file or directory This is a weird error to get. I had never used “scp” on my Mac before, only ssh, but I was familiar with sending commands over ssh to remote boxes like this: $git clone ssh:// . This command would clone the remote repository into the current directory. I (wrongly) assumed that sytax for other commands was the same as git. Just in case anyone else out there is having trouble with the syntax for the command “scp” on a mac here is the correct usage: Read On →

A recipe for happiness:

Add: 2880×1800 resolution 2.6GHz Quad Core i7 Ivy Bridge 16GB 1600MHz RAM 512GB Solid State Storage Garnish With: 4TB Promise Pegasus R4 RAID 5 What you get is the New MacBook Pro with Retina Display! I just ordered this. It has been 3.5 years since I bought a new computer and it has been excruciating. I suspected, given all the rumors, that Apple was going to come out with something pretty cool at WWDC and they certainly did. Read On →
